Anything Goes

Anything Goes is a 1930's musical comedy about the shenanigans of the passengers aboard the London-bound S.S. America. Reno is in love with Billy who is in love with Hope who is also in love with him but engaged to Evelyn at the wishes of her mother Evangeline who is carrying on with businessman Whitney who is Billy's boss. Got it? Throw in public enemy number 13, gangster Moonface and his girl Erma, a Captain searching for celebrities and two recovering gamblers from China and sit back to watch the drama unfold.

Natasha Stanton as Reno steals the show. Her vocals are exceptional and the dynamic with Billy and Moonface is genuine. Liam Beiglari as Moonface is hilarious, from his animated facial expression to his exaggerated American accent – the characterisation of his part is ideal. Another comic standout is Alex Andrews as Evelyn, his over-the-top British aristocrat persona is brilliant, as is the physicality he brings to the character.

I really couldn't fault any of the musical performances on stage, the big musical number to Anything Goes was a vivacious, lively and entertaining number that utilised the entire cast. Understandably, as this was a University of Sydney production, the cast was quite young, having said that it made some of the roles a bit of a stretch but no less impressive. The costuming was a little hit and miss, the general chorus looked more 1940's than 30's and Hope's dress in the first act was almost victorian and oddly frumpy. Thankfully in the second act she was decked out in a stunning 1930's gown more in keeping with her aristocratic upbringing. Assuming, as this was a university production, their was most likely a strict budget, this would explain the slightly skewed styling choices. Ultimately this didn't detract from the performance and the entire cast should be incredibly proud of the performance they put forward.
